The auto industry isn't the only one praising Ford. Those who consider themselves "green" supporters are also admiring the American automaker's dedication to the environment. Actually, many consider Ford to be the "greenest" automaker today. Ford has recently given eco-friendly advocates even more green by utilizing recycling, or "upcycling," within the company.
Ford seat covers offered on the all new Ford Focus Electric will be produced from materials extracted from used plastic water bottles. So, that next bottle of Smart Water you purchase, may just become a passenger seat after you recycle it!
The American automaker partnered with REPREVE for this effort. Together, they will use 2 million plastic bottles to be recreated into seat fabric.
"REPREVE's fabric is a polyester fiber made from a blend of recycled PET plastic, along with other recycled post-consumer material," as stated in Ford's press release. "The car will be the first with an interior made with 100 percent clean technology, far exceeding the company's goal of 25 percent clean technology across their whole vehicle line-up."1
Each Ford Focus will use twenty two recycled plastic bottles, which will help keep PET material out of landfills and help reduce energy consumption by offsetting the use of refined crude-oil for production.
